Colombia 1847 1/10 real

from the Stack's Bowers 2018 ANA sale, lot 44166

This specimen was lot 44166 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $264. The catalog description^[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1847 1/10 Real. PR-64 BN (PCGS). Exceptionally attractive with blended chocolate brown and mint color. A delightful near gem. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins." The specimen is a decimo from 1847-48, one of Colombia's first attempts to issue copper coins since the emergency issues of the 1820's. They were minted in London and had a face value of one centavo of a peso. It was not a success, and no further base metal coins were issued until the 1870's.
