Colombia 1846-P UM 16 pesos
This specimen was lot 30644 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $1,175. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 16 Pesos 1846 POPAYAN-UM AU53 ANACS, Popayan mint. Visually stunning and perhaps choice for the assigned grade, this broad issue features well-styled elements that express very limited wear and golden surfaces that are sheathed in a satin finish. Lustrous, with only a few scattered ticks, and very appealing as such." This type, struck at Popayán 1837-49, replaced the earlier 8 escudos (KM 82.1) and is identical in size and weight. It was also produced at Bogotá. The type is common enough that some attempt to collect date sets. Three assayers are recorded for this date: UM, UE and UR.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.
