Colombia 1846-P UM 1/2 real
This specimen was lot 70590 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1/2 Real, 1846-UM. Popayan Mint. PCGS VF-25 Gold Shield. Some striking weakness is noted, along with moderate, even wear throughout, but this delightful minor nevertheless retains clear details. Ex: The Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins (Stack's Bowers - 8/2018) Lot # 44155." This example is a half real struck for REPUBLICA DE NUEVA GRANADA from 1838-1848 at the Popayán mint. The initials UM correspond to the assayers. Nueva Granada was a Centralist Republic created upon the dissolution of Gran Colombia in 1830. The country held this name until 1858, when the Granadine Confederation was formed.
