Colombia 1844-P UM 2 pesos
This type was struck 1838-46 at Popayán only. The Bogotá mint restricted itself to gold pesos and sixteen pesos during this period. This specimen was lot 40351 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1844-UM 2 Pesos. Popayán mint. MS-64 (PCGS). A spectacular example of this denomination. Fully struck and boldly lustrous over choice yellow gold surfaces. A thin die crack crosses the reverse shield below center. In terms of preservation, this is the finest example of this design type in the collection. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins. Ex. Steinberg's, July 1981."
