This specimen was lot 2428 in Goldberg sale 78 (Los Angeles, January 2014), where it sold for $1,351. The catalog description[1] noted, "Colombia. 16 Pesos, 1844-UM (Popayán). Liberty head left. Reverse: Arms. Toned with luster. NGC graded AU-53." This type was struck at Popayán 1837-46 and at Bogotá 1837-49 and superseded the earlier eight escudos. Both types are common enough that some attempt to collect complete date sets.
