This specimen was lot 24388 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $1,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "Nueva Granada gold 16 Pesos 1844-RS Bogotá, MS61 NGC, virtually fully lustrous with only a light scattering of contact marks, quite attractive for the assigned grade." This type was struck at Popayán 1837-46 and at Bogotá 1837-49 and superseded the earlier eight escudos. Both types are common enough that some attempt to collect complete date sets.
