This type was struck 1838-46 at Popayán only. The Bogotá mint restricted itself to gold pesos and sixteen pesos during this period. This specimen was lot 30459 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $587.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic of Nueva Granada gold 2 Pesos 1845 Popayán-UE, XF45 NGC. Quite bold for this crudely struck series with strong features on both sides. Very scarce in this grade. Ex: 'Colonel' E.H.R. Green; Green Estate' Partnership of Eric P Newman/B.G. Johnson." Assayer "UM" is also recorded for this date.
