Colombia 1819-P FM 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 24373 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $2,820. The catalog description[1] noted, "Ferdinand VII gold 2 Escudos 1819-FM Popayán, AU50 NGC, lightly toned and original with bold design features, scarce and underrated type." This specimen is one of a type struck at Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) 1808-11 and Popayán 1817-19. The Colombian mints (Popayán and Nuevo Reino) concentrated on minting gold, to the near exclusion of silver which predominated at the other colonial mints. While one escudos and eight escudos are plentiful, two escudos are rare. Assayer FM is recorded for 1816-20.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.875 fine gold, .190 troy oz AGW.
