Sedwick sale 12, lot 146

This specimen was lot 146 in Sedwick sale 12 (Winter Park, FL, October 2012), where it sold for $1,593. The catalog description[1] noted, "Popayán, Colombia, bust 2 escudos, Ferdinand VII (bust of Charles IV), 1818FM, rare. Lustrous UNC with faint hairlines, curious flan-bulge on reverse, 3-year type with high catalog value." This specimen is one of a type struck at Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) 1808-11 and Popayán 1817-19. The Colombian mints (Popayán and Nuevo Reino) concentrated on minting gold, to the near exclusion of silver which predominated at the other colonial mints. While one escudos and eight escudos are plentiful, two escudos are rare. Assayer FM is recorded for 1816-20.
