Colombia 1817-P FM 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 40256 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1817-FM 2 Escudos. Popayán mint. Ferdinand VII (1808-1833). EF Detail — Ex Jewelry (PCGS). While some shallow natural granularity is noted, and hairlines remain from an old cleaning, this does not look like a piece that has seen life in jewelry. Well struck and nicely detailed, though some unobtrusive adjustment marks are noted near the central obverse. Fairly natural in appearance, a good looking example of the scarce final Popayán 2 Escudos type. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins. Ex. Hans M.F. Schulman's sale of June 1972, lot 94." This type was struck at Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) 1808-11 and at Popayán 1817-19 and is quite a bit scarcer than the earlier type of Charles IV, last struck in 1806. The bust of Ferdinand VII did not appear on any Colombian coins during his reign.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.875 fine gold, .190 troy oz AGW.
