Colombia 1779-P SF escudo
This specimen was lot 40027 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1779-SF Escudo. Popayán mint. Carlos III (1759-1788). AU-55 (PCGS). Frosty and lustrous light yellow gold with some hints of rose and olive. A very attractive piece, well centered on the obverse, aligned to 6:00 on the reverse. Aside from a natural striation that subtly crosses the portrait at the nose, no flaws are seen. A nice coin. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins. Ex. Hans M.F. Schulman's sale of February 1973, lot 237." This type was struck at Popayan and Nuevo Reino 1772-84 and was superseded by a type which, though identical to the naked eye, was only 0.875 fine.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.38 g, 0.901 fine gold, .098 troy oz ASW.
