This specimen was lot 40029 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1780-JJ Escudo. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) mint. Carlos III (1759-1788). AU-53 (PCGS). A splash of rose and pastel toning nests behind the portrait, contrasting with the lustrous light yellow gold surfaces seen elsewhere. Some subtle toning is noted on the reverse. A sharp and appealing piece for the grade. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins. Ex. Sidney Smith, December 1981." This type was struck at Popayan and Nuevo Reino 1772-84 and was superseded by a type which, though identical to the naked eye, was only 0.875 fine.
