Bolivia 1779-PTS PR escudo
This specimen was lot 40074 in Stack's Bowers Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction (Pittsburgh, August 2026), where it sold for $2,196. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. 2 Escudos, 1779-PTS PR. Potosi Mint. Charles III. PCGS VF-35. A RARE and seldom encountered type, this wholesome example displays a minimum of handling and remains enticingly original, and stands as the only representative in the PCGS census." While silver coins from Bolivia exist in vast quantities, gold from Bolivia is scarce. This is a rare date of a seldom seen type struck 1778-85. The assayer PR appears for 1776-95. In 1785, the alloy was debased from 0.901 to 0.875 fine gold.
