This specimen was of lot 23610 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $1,645. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos III gold 8 Escudos 1779-SF Popayán, nice XF-AU, softly struck on the bust but with prooflike luster in the legends." This type was struck at Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and Popayán 1772-84 and is the most common gold coin of Charles III. It remains much in demand and is still expensive. Many overdates are recorded.
