Colombia 1632-C E 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 44055 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $5,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. Cob 2 Escudos, 1(6)32-C E. Cartagena Mint. Philip IV. PCGS MS-62. Well centered and sharply struck, this enchanting example offers a clear rendition of the bottom portions of the date reading "132" with an omitted 6, as well as finely engraved devices throughout with no evidence of doubling. Though Calicó mentions that the assayer's initial is retrograde for the year, this example seems to display a normal "E." From the S.P. Rutherford Collection. Ex: Sedwick 14 (10/2013) Lot # 32." The Cartagena mint briefly struck coins 1627-35, but few with legible dates.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.87 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 7.00 g.
