Steve Album Auction 53, lot 1449

This specimen was lot 1449 in Steve Album Auction 53 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA (PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC): 1 yuan, 1980, struck in brass, Summer Olympic Games, Moscow - Soccer, piedfort (piéfort) issue, PCGS graded PF69 Cameo." This NCLT was part of a series issued for the 1980 Olympics in Moscow and Lake Placid, New York. It represents China's first serious venture into making and marketing commemoratives, which would explode with the introduction of the panda gold coin in 1983. The specification given below is for the regular issue, not the piefort depicted here.

Recorded mintage: 40,000 proofs.

Specification: 8.8 g, brass, 28 mm diameter.
