China 1980 30 yuan KM-25
This specimen was lot 1116 in Sincona sale 59 (Zürich, October 2019), where it sold for 1,800 CHF (about US$2,180 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"CHINA | Volksrepublik, 30 Yuan 1980. Piéfort. Olympische Winterspiele 1980 in Lake Placid. Abfahrtslauf. Selten. Nur 500 Exemplare geprägt. NGC PF69 Ultra Cameo. (people's republic of China, thirty yuan of 1980, piefort. Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, downhill slalom. Rare. Only 500 pieces struck. Proof.)"
This NCLT was part of a series issued for the 1980 Olympics in Moscow and Lake Placid, New York. It represents China's first serious venture into making and marketing commemoratives, which would explode with the introduction of the panda gold coin in 1983.
