This specimen was lot 70400 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $576. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. Yuan, 1980. Olympic Series, Biathlon. PCGS PROOF-65 DEEP CAMEO Secure Holder. Brass Piefort for the 13th Winter Olympic Games at Lake Placid. Well struck with mirrored fields and rich orange-peel toning. One spot of discoloration obverse above ID of PLACID." The Chinese government has, since the mid 1980's, produced a mind boggling array of bullion related collectibles. A complete set is thousands of types yet buyers clamor for more. This is a very early issue, minted before the invention of the Panda, and sold only in a modest amount.
