Sincona sale 59, lot 1112

This specimen was lot 1112 in Sincona sale 59 (Zürich, October 2019), where it sold for 400 CHF (about US$485 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"CHINA | Volksrepublik, 250 Yuan 1980. XVIII. Olympische Winterspiele in Lake Placid. Abfahrtsläufer. NGC PF69 Ultra Cameo. (people's republic of China, 250 yuan of 1980. Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, downhill slalom. Proof.)"

This NCLT was part of a series issued for the 1980 Olympics in Moscow and Lake Placid, New York. It represents China's first serious venture into making and marketing commemoratives, which would explode with the introduction of the panda gold coin in 1983.

Recorded mintage: 20,000 proofs.

Specification: 8 g, 0.917 fine gold.
