China 1980 15 yuan
This specimen was lot 1121 in Sincona sale 59 (Zürich, October 2019), where it sold for 1,800 CHF (about US$2,180 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"CHINA | Volksrepublik, 15 Yuan 1980. Piéfort. Olympische Sommerspiele 1980 in Moskau. Bogenschützen. Selten. Nur 500 Exemplare geprägt. NGC PF68 Ultra Cameo. (people's republic of China, fifteen yuan of 1980, piefort, Olympic Summer Games in Moscow, archery. Rare. Only 500 pieces struck.)"
This NCLT was part of a series issued for the 1980 Olympics in Moscow and Lake Placid, New York. It represents China's first serious venture into making and marketing commemoratives, which would explode with the introduction of the panda gold coin in 1983.
Recorded mintage: 15,000 + 2,000 pieforts.
