Chile 1927 peso
The specimen shown is a type struck in Chile 1921-27. It was the last Chilean peso to contain silver. The succeeding copper-nickel type (KM 176) was issued 1933 and 1940. Numerous varieties exist for the 1927, depending on the shape of the "1" above the "UN PESO" and whether the fineness is expressed at "0.5" or "0,5". Oscar Roty's defiant condor, first used in 1895, appeared on virtually all Chilean silver and copper-nickel coins until 1940. The second specimen was lot 864 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[2] noted, "CHILE, Santiago, 1 peso, 1927, thin 1, NGC MS 67 (Colección Val y Mexía Label), finest known in NGC census. Fully brilliant and nearly flawless, the finest of more than 20 in the current NGC census. Pedigreed to the Val y Mexia Collection."
