CNG Lissner sale, lot 1404

This specimen was lot 1404 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $1,452. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE, Republic. 1818-present. AV 5 Pesos. Santiago mint. Dated 1870 So. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 63. Choice brilliant uncirculated. Very choice for type and very rare in this grade with only one in MS 64 being higher for the type. Purchased from Lou Collins, July 1979." This type was struck without change in Santiago, Chile, 1867-73 and succeeded a very similar type (KM 130) that was struck 1854-67. Mintages are generally smaller than those of the larger ten pesos. The succeeding type was considerably smaller.
