Ceylon 1920-B 50 cents

from the Stack's Bowers 2020 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72261

This specimen was lot 72261 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $70. The catalog description^[1] noted, "CEYLON. 50 Cents, 1920-B. Bombay Mint. PCGS MS-63 Gold Shield. A choice example, this mostly steel gray specimen presents some subtle russet and burnt sienna toning speckled throughout." This type was struck 1919-29. The prior type was 0.800 fine silver. Ceylon, famous for tea, attained its independence in 1948 after the British left India and is now known as Sri Lanka.

Recorded mintage: 800,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 5.83 g, 0.550 fine silver, 23.8 mm diameter.
