Canada 1899 10 cents
These two specimens were lots 20620 and 20621 in Heritage sale 3008 (New York, January 2010). Lot 20620 sold for $1,955 and lot 20621 sold for $2,990. The catalog description[1] noted for the first,
"Victoria 10 Cents 1899 Small 9's, MS65 ICCS. A beautiful example, with superb rose-gray and argent-gray toning over fully lustrous surfaces. Very scarce in this Gem condition. Only one piece has been certified finer by ICCS 6/1),"
and for the second,
"Victoria 10 Cents 1899 Large 9's, MS65 ICCS. Spectacular silvery-gray and violet toning over fully lustrous, near-flawless surfaces with a full strike. Very rare in this condition. Only one example has been certified finer by ICCS (2/1)."
The type was struck 1858 and 1870-1901 and is fairly common in grades up to Very Fine after which the price ascends rapidly. The "Large 9's" variety is listed at about 60% more than the "Small 9's" variety.
Recorded mintage: 1,200,000 (all varieties).
