This specimen was lot 70198 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, February 2020), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. Cent, 1899. London Mint. Victoria. PCGS MS-64 Red Brown Gold Shield. Repunched 9 variety. Featuring a clear 9 below the second 9 in the date, this Near Gem presents more red than brown in the overall color, along with pleasing surfaces from free from nearly any marks." This type was struck 1870-1901 in large quantities and is readily available in grades up to brown Uncirculated. The 1899 is priced slightly higher than the commonest date (1900-H) but is otherwise ordinary.

Recorded mintage: 2,400,000.

Specification: 5.67 g, bronze, 25.4 mm diameter, plain edge.
