Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1856-B 10 thaler Fr-748
This specimen was lot 2402 in Künker sale 439 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,752 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM Wilhelm, 1831-1884. 10 Taler 1856 B. GOLD. Seltener Jahrgang. Sehr schön. (duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, William, 1831-84, ten thalers of 1856. Rare date, very fine.)"
This type was issued in moderate quantities 1853-57. By this time, the gold 2½ and five thaler had been suspended. William's brother Karl II was overthrown in 1830 after refusing to recognize a constitution imposed by his cousin and regent, prince George of Great Britain. The last ten thaler was struck in 1857, superseded by the gold krone (Fr-750).
