Künker sale 386, lot 5105

This specimen was lot 5105 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €750 (about US$969 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, Wilhelm, 1831-1884. Taler 1855, B. Seltener Jahrgang. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, William I, 1831-84, thaler of 1855. Rare date, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel struck thalers to the Prussian standard (22.27 g, 0.750 fine silver) until 1855, then vereinsthalers thereafter. The type was struck in small numbers 1853-55. Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel joined the German Empire in 1871 and the duke died in 1884 without an heir due to a succession dispute. No coinage was struck for the state until 1915, when the claimant's son married the daughter of Wilhelm II.
