Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1768-IAP 12 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 73261 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 12 Mariengroschen, 1768-IAP. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS AU-58. Featuring one of the more well-proportioned wildmen that this cataloger has seen, the present specimen is a decided cut above that which is generally encountered in this popular series, with the engraver skillfully capturing actual human characteristics, and on a smaller, minor-sized planchet no less. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This denomination was one-third of a thaler or one half gulden. This type was struck 1735-80 and is common. Mintmaster IAP appears 1763-72. About this time, the convention thaler was adopted, which acknowledged that the gulden was now half a thaler instead of the former two-thirds.
