Stack's Bowers September 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74501
SB923-74501r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74501 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler), 1766-IAP. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS Genuine--Scratch, AU Details. This is a handsome About Uncirculated survivor, with pewter gray patina on both sides blending with flaxen silver coloration. Overall detail is bold for the assigned grade, in part due to a rather sharp strike bringing out intricacies in the figure of the Wild Man. A light pinscratch, almost like a staple mark, is identifiable in the upper left portion of the obverse, but it is a minute imperfection when all things are considered. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1735-80 for Karl I and is common. Twenty-four mariengroschen made a gulden, which was originally two-thirds of a thaler but had slipped to half a thaler by the end of the reign. Another gulden of this reign featured the leaping stallion reverse (KM 895), altho it was not struck every year. Mintmaster IAP appears 1763-72.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-362; KM-870; Welter-2735.
