SB1123-73516r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73516 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler), 1723-EPH. Zellerfeld Mint. August Wilhelm. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, Unc Details. A pleasing example of this type with an uncluttered obverse that let's the viewer concentrate on the boldly executed Wild Man motif. The audacious presence and detail in this rendering of the figure makes this a wonderful, compelling coin, despite some weakened lettering on the reverse resulting from the bold figure. The noted cleaning does not visually distract from the design features. An engaging example worthy of a strong bid. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck for August Wilhelm 1714-30. Mintmaster "C" is also recorded for 1723. Twenty-four mariengroschen made two-thirds of a thaler or one gulden.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.
