Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1723-EPH 2 mariengroschen KM-727
This specimen was lot 73255 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 2 Mariengroschen, 1723-EPH. Zellerfeld Mint. August Wilhelm. PCGS AU-58. KM-727; Welter-2408. Almost entirely without handling, this minor offers some champagne-olive toning, with some darker brown areas sprinkled throughout. Overall, an exceptional near-Mint example. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This denomination was one twelfth of a thaler. This type was struck 1714, 1717-24 and is common. Mintmaster EPH appears 1723-31. The denomination was also struck with a "leaping stallion" reverse (KM 752).
