Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1716-HH 24 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 74484 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler), 1716-HH. Zellerfeld Mint. August Wilhelm. PCGS AU-58. A lovely example with superior technical quality and outstanding eye appeal. Light golden-gray patina serves as a base for the toning that blankets the obverse, while the reverse displays pale olive gray. The texture is satiny and smooth with considerable luster remaining, almost to the point of verging on Mint State. Boldly define, the strike is almost completely without weakness, augmenting eye appeal. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Ex: Karl Stephens with old dealer ticket." This type was struck for August Wilhelm 1714-30. A two-thirds thaler with a leaping stallion reverse was also coined in 1716 (KM 757).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
