Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1712-HH 12 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 73508 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 12 Mariengroschen (1/3 Taler), 1712-HH. Zellerfeld Mint; mm: crossed axes between HH. Anton Ulrich. PCGS AU-55. A scarcer variety of the Wild Man coinage, this example offers subdued luster on medium gray surfaces and beautifully generous cerulean on the obverse, and gold with hints of russet and cobalt on the reverse. Generally well struck, though with a bit of minor shadowing on the reverse and light wear. An attractive and desirable piece. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." Anton Ulrich ruled alone after his brother's death in 1704; this type was struck 1705-14 and is common. All have mintmaster "HH". Twelve mariengroschen made one third of a thaler or half a gulden.
