Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1707 12 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 73506 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 12 Mariengroschen (1/3 Taler), 1707. Zellerfeld Mint; mm: three stars. Anton Ulrich. PCGS AU-53. Deep argent surfaces contrast with vivacious argent, gold, russet and cerulean in the protected areas. The reverse shows some shadowing due to the Wild Man figure opposite, and there are a few soft areas on the reverse. Nonetheless, a colorful and attractive example of the type. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1705-11 and is fairly common. Twelve mariengroschen made one third of a thaler or half a gulden. No mintmaster appears on this coin.
