Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1705-RB thaler Dav-2115
This specimen was lot 55502 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. Taler, 1705-RB. Zellerfeld Mint. Anton Ulrich. Extremely Fine Details -- Mount Removed. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." Anton Ulrich had been co-ruler of the duchy with his older brother Rudolf August from 1685 until Rudolf August's death in 1704, whereupon Anton Ulrich ruled alone until 1714. Four different thalers were struck in 1705: KM 669/Dav-2115, shown here, struck 1704-05; KM 670/Dav-2115A struck 1704-05; KM 686.1/Dav-2116, struck 1705-11; and KM 687/Dav-2932, struck for a mint visit, rare.
