Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1685 24 mariengroschen KM-559
This specimen was lot 55493 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 24 Mariengroschen, 1685. Zellerfeld Mint. Rudolph August & Anton Ulrich. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." Rudolf August was the older brother and inherited the title on the death of August II in 1666. Interested in art and hunting, he delegated affairs of state to his brother Anton Ulrich, a situation he formalized in 1685 by making him co-ruler. Two different gulden were struck in 1685: KM 529 struck for Rudolph August alone 1677-85, and KM 559 struck for Rudolph August and Anton Ulrich 1685-1704, which is slightly more common.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
