Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1685 24 mariengroschen KM-529
This specimen was lot 74461 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler), 1685. Zellerfeld Mint. Rudolph August. PCGS Genuine--Graffiti, AU Details. Appealing warm gray patina includes shades of amber, russet, and orange-lilac color when rotated under a light source. The 'graffiti' is quite a minor trait; at some point long ago someone pinscratched the number '156' in the legend gap just above the Wild Man. It is hard to spot without careful examination and is not by any means a notable distraction to consider. Quite attractive overall, astute collectors are sure to target this example because of its many strengths and few weaknesses. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1677-85. The design was revised midway thru 1685 to add Anton Ulrich as co-ruler (KM 559) and struck in that form until 1704.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
