Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1685-RB thaler Dav-6388
This specimen was lot 33670 in Heritage sale 3098 (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $2,280. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Rudolf August & Anton Ulrich Taler 1685-RB AU58 NGC, Zellerfeld mint. Light slate surfaces crowning the motifs with residual luster. A similar example was sold by Kunker in June 2004 (Lot 1758) as an unlisted unique date, the example offered being only the third we were able to locate." Rudolf August was the older brother and inherited the title on the death of August II in 1666. Interested in art and hunting, he delegated affairs of state to his brother Anton Ulrich, a situation he formalized in 1685 by making him co-ruler. This one year type, with Anton Ulrich added to the obverse, seems to be rare. Many other "wild man" thalers from this state are common.
