Künker sale 354, lot 5488

This specimen was lot 5488 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €14,000 (about US$ including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, Rudolf August und Anton Ulrich, 1685-1704. Reichstaler o. J. (1685), Goslar, auf die brüderliche Eintracht. Verschlungenes, spiegelbildliches Monogram//Dreifach behelmtes, 11feldiges Wappen, von zwei behelmten Löwen gehalten. Von großer Seltenheit. Prachtexemplar. Üblicher Stempelfehler am Rand, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Slg. Deecke, Auktion H. S. Rosenberg 22, Hannover 1925, Nr. 277 (dort "Aus Sammlung Mestwarb") und Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 44, Osnabrück 1998, Nr. 3442. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Rudolf August and Anton Ulrich, 1685-1704, undated thaler, Goslar mint, on their brotherly unity. Obverse: interwoven, mirror-image monogram; reverse: triple helmeted, eleven-fold arms, supported by two helmeted lions. Extremely rare, magnificent specimen with the Usual die error on the edge, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

Rudolf August was the older brother and inherited the title on the death of August II in 1666. Interested in art and hunting, he delegated affairs of state to his brother Anton Ulrich, a situation he formalized in 1685 by making him co-ruler.
