Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 55481

This specimen was lot 55481 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $216. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. Taler, 1685-RB. Zellerfeld Mint. Rudolph August. Very Fine Details -- Environmental Damage. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1684-85 and is a common thaler of Rudolph August. It varies from the previous Dav-6379 by the addition of a ring around the wild man. This specimen is a product of the Zellerfeld mint; RB are the initials of mintmaster Rudolf Bornemann. The "wild man" design was popular in Brunswick and Hannover at the time and appeared on many different thalers and minors. Rudolf August was the older brother and inherited the title on the death of August II in 1666. Interested in art and hunting, he delegated affairs of state to his brother Anton Ulrich, a situation he formalized in 1685 by making him co-ruler.
