Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1647 thaler Dav-6338
This specimen was lot 74449 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Wolfenbuttel. Taler, 1647. Zellerfeld Mint; mm: crossed keys. August "the Younger". PCGS EF-45. A solid example for the type, exhibiting old cabinet toning and golden and lustrous highlights - particularly on the reverse. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type of 1639-48 is not listed as rare. For some reason, this example lacks the "HS" initials found on other dates of this issue. The photo in the SCWC shows Dav-6347, not this coin.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 29 g, 0.875 fine silver, 42 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: Dav-6338; KM-393.2; Welter-819.
