Künker sale 293, lot 643

This specimen was lot 643 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €800 (about US$1,078 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, HERZOGTUM Christian Ludwig, 1641-1648. Reichstaler 1647, Zellerfeld. Sehr seltener Jahrgang. Attraktives, sehr schönes Exemplar mit feiner Tönung. (duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg, Christian Louis, 1641-48, thaler of 1647, Zellerfeld mint. Very rare date, attractive very fine example with fine toning.)"

Christian Ludwig was duke in Calenberg 1641-48 and in Celle 1648-65. His younger brother Georg Wilhelm was duke in Calenberg 1648-65 and in Celle 1665-1705. The last brother, Ernst August, was duke in Calenberg 1679-98 and elector of Hannover 1692-98. Ernst August's son George inherited Calenberg and Hannover in 1698, Celle in 1705 and the throne of Great Britain in 1714. We have filed this under Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg even tho we put an identical coin dated 1649 under Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle. The auctioneers incorrectly labeled this as Dav-6515, which has the duke's name spelled "CHRIS: LUD: HERTZ. Z. G: L." This "wild man" thaler of 1643-57 is slightly scarce altho the auction cataloguers call this a very rare date.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM 47.3, Dav-6517; Welter Nachtrag 1506.
