Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74612

This specimen was lot 74612 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 1/4 Taler, 1626-HS. Zellerfeld or Goslar Mint. Friedrich Ulrich. PCGS EF-45. Presenting a mostly gray background, this lightly handled and entirely wholesome piece offers some alluring iridescence around the devices of the coat-of-arms. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This quarter thaler was struck 1614-29 and despite the many years of production, is rather scarce. A one-eighth thaler (KM 167) and half thaler (KM 51) also exist. In 1626, another quarter thaler marking the death of the duke's mother (KM 362) was struck.
