Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1625-HL 1/4 thaler
This specimen was lot 74611 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 1/4 Taler, 1625-HL. Zellerfeld or Goslar Mint. Friedrich Ulrich. PCGS AU-50. Evenly handled and pleasingly hued, this wildman minor offers some alluring iridescence sprinkled handsomely throughout. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This quarter thaler was struck 1614-29 and despite the many years of production, is rather scarce. A one-eighth thaler (KM 167) and half thaler (KM 51) also exist. In 1626, another quarter thaler marking the death of the duke's mother (KM 362) was struck.
