Künker sale 354, lot 5433

This specimen was lot 5433 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €28,000 (about US$38,968 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, Friedrich Ulrich, 1613-1634. Löser zu 3 Reichstalern 1625, Goslar. Ausbeute der Grube St. Jacob in Lautenthal. Ohne Wertpunze; Münzmeister Hermann Schlanbusch. Fünffach behelmtes, 11feldiges Wappen, r. wilder Mann mit Baumstamm als Schildhalter, oben die geteilte Jahreszahl 16 - 25, unten die geteilte Signatur H (mit Zainhaken) - S//St. Jacob mit großem Hut steht v. v. mit Pilgerstab und Buch auf blumenbewachsenem Boden, zu den Seiten Schrift, oben strahlender Name Jehovas, unten Kartusche ohne Wertzahl zwischen der Signatur H - Z. Preussag Collection (Auktion London Coin Galleries/Künker 1) zu 42 (dort mit Wertpunze); Kluge (Slg. Preussag) 1. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Attraktives Exemplar mit herrlicher Patina, fast vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Slg. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Frederick Ulrich, 1613-34, triple thaler of 1625, Goslar mint, for the St. Jacob mine, without denomination punch. Obverse: five helmeted, eleven-fold arms supported by a wild man to the right, date above, mintmaster's initials below; reverse: St. James with large hat and pilgrim's staff and book stands on flowered ground, with the Name of the Lord shining above. The cartouche at his feet has no denomination punched in. Very scarce in this quality, attractive example with superb patina, about extremely fine.)"

St. Jacob (Jacobus) gehörte zum Kreis der zwölf Apostel und war später Schutzheiliger der Pilger. Der Legende nach soll er in Spanien gewirkt haben. Über seinem angeblichen Grab wurde eine Kirche erbaut, um die herum die Stadt Santiago de Compostela entstand, die bereits seit dem Mittelalter einer der bekanntesten Wallfahrtsorte der Christenheit ist. (St. James (Jacobus) was one of the twelve apostles and was later the patron saint of pilgrims. According to legend, he is said to have worked in Spain. A church was built over his alleged grave, around which the city of Santiago de Compostela was built, which was one of the most famous places of pilgrimage in Christendom since the Middle Ages.)"

The duke issued an extensive series of large multiple thalers; all are rare and highly coveted today. This design was also used on a 1½ thaler (KM 356/Dav-LS57), double thaler (Dav-LS56), 2½ thaler (Dav-LSA56) and a quadruple thaler (KM 360/Dav-LS54). By leaving the denomination off the die, to be punched in later, one pair of dies could be used for all. However, sometimes this step was omitted.
