Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1624-HS 10 thaler Dav-LS47
This specimen was lot 8 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €48,000 (about US$62,271 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBUTTEL, Friedrich Ulrich, 1613-1634. Löser zu 10 Reichstalern 1624, Goslar oder Zellerfeld. Ohne Wertpunze; Münzmeister Hermann Schlanbusch. Der geharnischte Herzog reitet r. mit Kommandostab und umgelegtem, wehenden Mantel//Fünffach behelmtes, 11feldiges Wappen, zu den Seiten je ein aufrecht stehender Löwe als Schildhalter, unten leere Kartusche. Von allergrößter Seltenheit. Feine Tönung, rauhe Stelle auf der Rückseite, Felder leicht geglättet, kl. Randfehler, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Slg. des Freiherren Wilhelm Knigge, Auktion H. S. Rosenberg, Hannover, Dezember 1929, Nr. 424 und der Slg. Dr. Werner Koch, Auktion Dr. Busso Peus Nachf. 273, Frankfurt/Main 1970, Nr. 131 (dort als Unikum bezeichnet). Erworben am 10.11.1991 von Karl Müseler, Hannover. Exemplar der Preussag Collection, Auktion London Coin Galleries/Künker 1, London 2015, Nr. 34. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Frederick Ulrich, 1613-34, ten thalers of 1624, Goslar or Zellerfeld mint, without value punched in. Obverse: the armored and mantled duke rides right with baton; reverse: five helmeted manifold arms supported by lions, empty cartouche at bottom. Extremely rare, fine toning, a rough spot on the reverse, some smoothing, edge defects, very fine to extremely fine.)"
The duke also issued three, four, five and six thalers in 1624, probably to raise money for the Thirty Years War.
