Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1606 1/8 thaler
This specimen was lot 73644 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Wolfenbuttel. 1/8 Taler, 1606. Zellerfeld or Goslar Mint. Heinrich Julius. PCGS EF-40. An extremely rare variety of Wild Man coinage. Dove gray surfaces with deeper toning in protected areas. Some very minor weak areas near the rim, but an elusive piece. We can only account for two examples being auctioned in the prior two decades. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Includes ticket from Kuenker." This denomination was struck only intermittently and this one year type was the first issue since 1602. It is not priced in the SCWC.
