Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1605 1/4 thaler KM-5
This specimen was lot 74608 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Wolfenbuttel. 1/4 Taler, 1605. Zellerfeld or Osterode Mint; mm: crowned heart. Heinrich Julius. PCGS EF-45. Only lightly handled and very pleasingly toned, this wildman minor presents a great rendition of the floral-clad hermit along with clear details throughout. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Includes ticket from Westfaelische Auktionsgesellschaft as Lot # 481." This quarter thaler was struck 1600-13 and despite the many years of production, is rather scarce. A half thaler (KM 22) also exists.
