Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74605

This specimen was lot 74605 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Wolfenbuttel. 1/4 "Light" Taler, 1586. Goslar Mint; mm: patriarchal cross. Julius. PCGS AU-55. Exhibiting just a light degree of gentle handling upon the high points, this deeply toned example still possesses some enchanting brilliance emanating from the protected areas. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Includes ticket from Udo Gans." This quarter thaler was struck in 1584-88 and it is somewhat scarce. The wild man is holding a lit candle, giving rise to the "light thaler" nickname for the coin. A half thaler (KM MB188) and thaler (Dav-9064) also exist.
