Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1585 thaler Dav-9064
This specimen was lot 3483 in Künker Auction 426 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €310 (about US$439 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM Julius, 1568-1589. Reichstaler 1585, Goslar. Lichttaler. Hübsche Patina, fast sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Julius 1568-89, "light" thaler of 1585, Goslar mint. Handsome patina, about very fine.)"
This "light" thaler was struck 1583-88 and is fairly common. The nickname derives from the candlestick held by the wild man. The reverse legend, "Aliis inserviendo consumor", translates as "I am consumed by serving others."
